About the assessment

A clear picture of your child's health

A Child and Adolescent Health Assessment gives you unhurried time with an experienced GP to review your child's health in full, combining a nurse health check with an in depth consultation. It works well as a routine review or when there is a specific concern you would like looked at.

You can book it as a routine review or when a specific concern arises. Either way, it gives a thorough view of your child's health, from physical and developmental to emotional wellbeing, and you leave with a written summary and clear next steps.

What we cover

Led by what matters to you and your child

Dr Sonali reviews your child's health history and discusses any concerns raised by your child or young person, alongside your own. These often include:

😊

Friendships and mental health

Worries about mood, anxiety, confidence, friendships or how your child is coping day to day.

🍽️

Gut and digestive problems

Constipation, tummy troubles and other digestive concerns that affect daily comfort.

🧠

Neurodiversity

Questions or challenges relating to how your child learns, focuses and experiences the world.

🥘

Nutrition and eating concerns

Appetite, fussy eating and building healthy, settled eating habits.

🩺

Physical health concerns

Growth, development, aches, tiredness or any physical symptom you have noticed.

❤️

Family health history

Inherited risks such as heart disease or diabetes, and what they may mean for your child.

HOW IT WORKS

Quick, painless and ready the same day

Your appointment is with Patrick, our healthcare assistant, who guides you through each step. The whole appointment takes around 10 minutes, and your result follows shortly afterwards.

There is nothing to prepare beforehand. You can eat and drink normally and continue any medication as usual.

1

Nurse appointment

A nurse or healthcare assistant takes general health readings, including height, weight and blood pressure, and checks that your questionnaire has been completed.

2

GP consultation with Dr Sonali

Dr Sonali reviews your child's health history and discusses your concerns in detail. Thirty minutes allows time to talk things through properly and for Dr Sonali to fully assess and understand your child's health.

The appointment with Dr Sonali is not only for the parent to discuss their concerns. It is also an opportunity for your child to share any concerns and to ask questions.

Dr Sonali likes to work collaboratively with both the parent and the child.

Before you come in

A short questionnaire in advance

Before your appointment, we send you a simple questionnaire to complete. This captures your child's health history in advance, so your time in the appointment is spent where it matters most, on your concerns and your child's care.

Testing and further support

Support that continues after your visit

Where it would help, we can arrange further support following your appointment. This may include:

  • Blood testing, either venous or finger prick, with local anaesthetic cream for comfort.

  • Diet and nutrition plans tailored to your child.

  • Medication or supplements where appropriate.

  • Referrals to specialists in some cases.

We also work in partnership with a trusted group of practitioners who specialise in children's health and family issues, and we may signpost parents to them where it would help. This allows for joined up care for your child, and it can be discussed at your appointment.

After your appointment, you receive a written summary report to keep. You can refer back to it through the year and compare the results at your next review, and share it with your NHS GP if you wish.

Continuity of care

Why regular reviews matter

Seeing a doctor who knows your child's history means their health can be followed over time. This supports the early diagnosis of any issues, provides continuity of care as your child grows, and gives parents reassurance and peace of mind.
